Apprenticeships have come a long way over the years. Traditionally, they may have been seen as a last option for those who were less academically inclined, and now more young people and parents feel they are a viable post 16 option. In fact, more than half of young adults would now consider doing an apprenticeship (Redrow, 2019). Redrow Homes recently released its third annual report on apprenticeship perceptions, and found that attitudes towards apprenticeships are improving.

Whilst attitudes towards apprenticeships as a whole are changing, it seems that more needs to be done in schools to raise awareness and provide information. Only 21% of young adults surveyed felt that they “received high quality careers advice, information and guidance on a wide range of careers from their school”, suggesting that many students aren’t aware of the range of options available to them. Additionally, a staggering 74% of students stated that “schools do not promote apprenticeships in the same way as they do with other educational routes”. There are also gender gaps in regards to who apprenticeships are being promoted to in school - with 68% of male students having received some information on apprenticeships, compared to only 57% of young females.

At the AIM Group, we are determined to tackle this issue head on. With a dedicated team of passionate school engagement coordinators, our goal is to raise awareness of apprenticeships, and ensure that all students have the knowledge and tools available to make informed decisions about what to do following on from school. By 2020, we plan to be working with 3000 schools, holding presentations, workshops and parent events to inform school leavers and caregivers of the wealth of opportunity an apprenticeship can provide.
