Statistics suggest young people are the most at risk of being made redundant after the latest unemployment reports were released.

Between August and November, people aged between 25 to 34 had a redundancy rate of 16.2 per 1,000. This is five times higher than it was during the same months the year before.

This worryingly comes after unemployment rose to 5% (it was previously at 4.9%).

It’s been suggested that a total of 7.5 million people could be unemployed by June.

Despite these statistics showcasing that the job market has become even more difficult to navigate as a result of the pandemic.

The data released for job vacancies was slightly more positive, showing an increase over the three-month period with over 81,000 new vacancies reported.

One scheme that could help the unemployment rates in young people is through apprenticeships, in fact, the government has already offered ‘rewards’ for businesses taking on young apprentices during this time. It’s likely that some businesses will look to apprentices to continue operating due to government support, they will receive, as well as the benefits that apprentices have been suggested to have, including an increased productivity rate.
