On the 15th January 2021, the UCAS entry deadline will hit. Thousands of young people across the country will be nervously watching as they submit their applications for university. It can be easy to think this is the only route that young people can take, but this is far from the big picture.

Unfortunately, there is still a low perception of apprenticeships by many students, even though some apprenticeships are the equivalent of a masters.

Despite this the pool of talented students looking/starting apprenticeships is increasing, with over 1.8 million people starting apprenticeships since May 2015.

So why is now the best time to hire?

The UK government have seen the value of apprenticeships to our economy, so much so that they extended and initiative that will see businesses funded up to £3,000 for hiring an apprentice before the 31st March 2021. It will also mean that many businesses will have 100% of their apprentice’s training funded by the government. Financially, if a business was looking to take on an apprentice, there’s never been a better time than now.

With redundancies on the rise, some may be worried that hiring a new member of staff could be a huge risk. But it is also worth noting that while the population of the job market has massively increased it also means there is a larger pool of talented young people that are desperate to kick start their career journey. In fact, a study by the UK government found that 74% of employers felt apprenticeships had improved the quality of their product!

What are the other options?

If you’re an employer, you don’t just have to hire an apprentice, in fact, you can even use apprenticeships to upskill an existing employee. This can help staff in your workforce develop new skills for the needs of your business or even take the next step up in the career ladder.
